OFB Contra Jam

Periodically the Thursday night dance is an open mic for callers, and open jam for musicians. Those evenings are always led by some of the best of our local talent and usually produce some awesome big band sounds. Here's some videos from the December 2, 2010 Contra Jam:

Band Videos

Appalachian Storm

Appalachian Storm

Appalachian Storm, now playing and known internationally, is a true home grown band who got their start in the contra jams at the Old Farmer's Ball. Come hear and dance to a great local band making it big.

"Appalachian Storm was amazing. I loved listening and dancing to them...it ROCKED." -- Anne Rowe

"I especially like the greater variety you've been adding in lately, with your original tunes and your broad range of contra sub-genres. You always keep the music interesting as well as high-energy dance-ability. I LOVE working with and dancing to you." -- Diane Silver

Atlantic Crossing

Atlantic Crossing

For about 15 years, the Vermont band Atlantic Crossing has been thrilling concert audiences and contra-dancers with traditional songs and acoustic instrumental music from New England - music which has deep Celtic roots in the British Isles and in French & Maritime Canada - together with original compositions inspired by these traditions.

the Avant Gardners

the Avant Gardners

Funky, homegrown and hot -- The Avant Gardeners are fiddler and vocalist Laura Light, George Paul on piano and accordion, Dave Wiesler on keyboards, guitar and mandolin and Jubal Creech on percussion. Frequent stand ins for stay at home dad Dave Wiesler are Al White and Dave Bartley.

The deep grooves of the band's mixture of traditional and composed tunes have contributed to the delirium of dancers at countless dances and concerts from coast to coast. Their range of performing styles from traditional swing, Celtic and old time and their facile improvisation on fiddle, piano, accordion, guitar, mandolin, and percussion have given this group their reputation as one of the premier contra and swing dance bands in the country.

Roger Gold

Laura Lengnick

Big Dog

Big Dog is Laura Lengnick and Roger Gold, two fantastic dance musicians who revel in the pleasure of interacting with the dancers on the floor.

Laura Lengnick delights dancers with a spontaneous jazz-inspired improvisational style that powers a danceable groove while staying solidly grounded in the New England contra dance tradition.

Roger Gold is an amazing guitarist who likes to "play" with the music; turning waltzes to klezmer, Bach into swing, and doing even stranger things to the tunes he writes. Roger's guitar styles range from classical to hard driving, rhythmic, contra dance music. He enjoys contra dancing, and enjoys playing music for contra dances, and has yet to figure out how to do both at the same time.

the Blue Ridge Rounders

The Blue Ridge Rounders

The Blue Ridge Rounders, of the Dark Corner of South Carolina, have traversed the region, winning band and individual music contests throughout the Carolinas. They are the 2006 and 2007 Mountain Music Champions and winners at the 2006 North Carolina State Fair Old Time band contest. Bob and Amy Buckingham, Joshua Johnson, and Dan Wood have won individual contests on fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, bass, and vocals.

The vocal prowess and instrumental skill of the Rounders transcends the commonly held notion of droning fiddles and trance inducing tunes. The Rounders entertain with a variety show befitting the stringband tradition with songs, tunes, and revelry. They are not afraid to take chances and any good song is worthy of the Rounder Way.

The Boys of Buncombe

Some great local talent, Steve Trismen, Jon Singleton, Tall Paul and Steve Burnside.

Carolina Dingos

Jamie Laval and Roger Gold make up this dynamic duo.

Jamie Laval won the 2002 U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Championship. He is one of the premier Celtic violinists on the international music scene today, Jamie Laval creates rapt audiences with his intensely passionate performances of traditional music of Scotland, Ireland, Brittany and Quebec, rendered with hints of classical refinement and ethnic music from around the world.

Cocks of the North

Cocks of the North

Hailing from Bloomington, Indiana, one of the epicenters of traditional American music in the United States, the Cocks of the North is anchored by Claudio Buchwald on piano. To his right stands Eric Schedler on accordion. Occasionally the two of them switch, with Buchwald going over to his fiddle, and Schedler the 88. Sam Bartlett plays an intricate and propulsive tenor banjo that electrifies musical arrangements and ignites the groove. Though they don't look that old, the band members combined have 80 years of dance playing experience!

While the Cocks are a dance band, they love nothing more than to entertain a sitting audience with medleys of tunes from Celtic lands, seductive piano compositions, musical humor, and outrageous stunts. This is Vaudeville and dance hall rolled into one. Not to be missed.

The Contrarians

The Contrarians

Will Carter: stand-up bass; Gary Reynolds: guitar, piano, trumpet; John Longwell: mandolin, tenor banjo, fiddle, sax; Paul Epstein: fiddle, guitar.

"The contras were great, the couples dancing divine and the waltzes sublime." --Rebecca Jones, contradance organizer, Cleveland, OH

"A Contrarians event delivers dazzling melody - including some great original tunes - along with a solid yet imaginative approach to rhythm. The band has consistently 'wowed the crowd' at dances and dance weekends throughout Ohio-Kentucky-West Virginia and beyond."

Here's a sample of their smooth dance sound:

Crowfoot

'Crowfoot blends three major roots systems of traditional music, and the result is electrifying......if this trio is playing a dance or a festival anywhere near you, be there!' -- Sing Out

Curious George

Curious George

Laura Lengnick, Paul Moore and Art Schuster play in this traditional American swing/contra combo. Laura plays swing fiddle and sings lead in this band which features Paul's piano improvisations. Classic swing at its best, this music is sure to please dancers as well as those want to sing along as they sit one out! This band is also a favorite among contra dancers in the Southeast for their swinging interpretations of traditional dance melodies.

Dancing Bears

Dancing Bears

Lew Gelfond, Mark Langner, John Culp

We took our name, in part, from the fact that we are all contra dancers. We play tunes from many different traditions including Celtic, New England, Appalachian, and French Canadian, as well as Swing tunes popular in the 20's and 30's. We combine these styles in ways that will often surprise and delight dancers, seasoned with occasional, sudden outbursts of Funk.

Most of us are long time Ashevillians. John Culp plays mandolin, Celtic guitar, banjo, and bodhran, and brings in a strong influence of traditional New England and Celtic music. Mark Langner lends a swing flavor to the band on guitar He builds and plays his own instruments, and is a contra dance caller and dance writer. Fiddler Lew Gelfond migrated to Asheville around 6 years ago, bringing his own mixture of Bluegrass, Swing, New England and Celtic music. Lew likes a lot of different styles, but swing is his favorite. Overall? We love what we do.

Fly by Night

Fly by Night

Laura Lengnick, Karen Gaughan, Beth Magill, Julia Weatherford.

Watch out when Laura is joined by Julia Weatherford on fiddle and cello, Beth Magill on flute and percussion and Karen Gaughan on piano!  This sizzling, 100% woman powered band can take you anywhere you want to go on the dance floor! Upbeat traditional New England contra dance tunes, lilting Celtic melodies, and funky, rockin' originals drive dancers wild.  Just when you think you can’t take anymore, the band brings it back home with lowdown, driving southern fiddle tunes.  If you want to take flight on the dance floor, this is the band for you!

Check out Julia's Web page on Fly by Night as well and listen to another great tune there, Haphazard Breakdown.

Flying the Tune

Flying the Tune

June Advincula and Lew Gelfond are "Flying the Tune" a two piece contra band with keyboard and fiddle. They have played River Falls, The Apple Barn in Boone, dances in Charlotte, at Gypsy Meltdown and many others. Lew plays fiddle with the Dancing Bears, Screech Owl Serenade and Blue Heaven too. June Advincula has played keyboard with The Real Magnolias, Catch and Release and Bad Mandos and the Women Who Love Them. We like to think that we are a spirited combination that work very well together. Hank Morris regularly calls with us.

Inexplicabillies

Inexplicabillies

What is inexplicable about these 3 guys? They bring power and experience from their roots in old time, celtic and the far off, hilly, Planet Billy to create driving and stimulating contra dance music. Sound and music Guru, Wes Maluk (guitar, tenor banjo, and percussion) and Mandolin/tenor banjo aficionado Joel McConnell, both from the  celtic band Skeeziks have teamed up with powerful fiddler and banjobilly, David White, from the popular contra bands Steamshovel and Appalachian Storm. They work well together, balancing the powerful driving sounds w/ the smooth trancelike rhythms and flow, smiling and gyrating all the while. But who 'watches' contra dance bands anyway...just bring your ears and dancing feet and come 'see' for yourself.

Jubal's Kin

Appalachia-infused Cosmic Americana -- The distinctively spare sound is grounded in a love for what can only be called the pure and real, at once embracing both a strong roots tradition and a fresh take on making music. At live shows or in the studio, a seemingly new subgenre is created, their songs displaying a chemistry of raw emotion vulnerable and unassuming with handcrafted spins that creak and stomp like a wooden dance floor...

Brother and sister, Roger and Gailanne Amundsen with Jeffrey

The Mean Lids

The Mean Lids

Miriam Larson on flute, kazoo, jaw-harp, slide- and train whistles; Ben Smith on fiddle; Matt Turino on fiddle, guitar and feet.

Only as mean as they need to be to keep the grit in their tones and the edge on their tunes, they are never seen without their signature cranial apparel. Spot them by their hats, their long lonesome sounds, and the @$$ kicking baritone fiddle chops emanating from their mean, mean fiddle fingers.

Here's a video of them performing (in constume) for a coffeehouse benefit:

Old 78s

Old 78s

Curly Miller and Carole Anne Rose play "Extreme" pumped-up rowdy Old Time fiddle and clawhammer banjo, Hillbilly Fiddle Rags, Classic Banjo duets, Celtic, World, and historic music, featuring the duo's unique combination of talents.

Curly is one of the premier fiddlers in the country today whose tone, texture and abilities, especially in the flatted keys, have broken new ground in exploring the old tunes. Curly has the unique ability to capture the raw essence of peasant dance and party fiddling from remote, indigenous fiddlers from European and North American cultures. Carole Anne's own intense clawhammer technique is combined with her custom designed 6-string (5-string style) banjo that has an 1893 S.S. Stewart 12 1/2" Imperial Banjeaurine pot. The power and drive that she achieves together with Curly, was described "like a freight-train coming through your living room!"

Check out their old time sound in the music samples at the top of this page!

The Red Wellies

The Red Wellies

This is possibly the best fiddle album I've heard since Frankie Gavin and Alec Finn. Apparently it is available as a CD, although as I write Amazon only stocks the MP3 version. The Red Wellies are fiddlers Beanie Odell and Duncan Wickel, and bouzouki player Vincent Fogarty, from North Carolina. Much of the time the two fiddles play in unison, and their togetherness is quite remarkable; but on the occasions they part to play counterpoint (as on "The Twelve Pins", here transposed down to C from its usual G), the effect is absolutely stunning. Combine all this with immaculate bouzouki accompaniments and rock-solid rhythm, and you have a debut album to be proud of. If I were an Irish dancer (which I'm not), this would be the album I'd want to dance to. -- a review of their album from Amazon by Paul Magnussen

Check out their music on their Web site.

Steamshovel

Steamshovel

Steamshovel, made up of Roger Gold (Guitar, foot drum) and David White (fiddle and banjo) is indeed a dynamic duo in the contra dance world. Roger is well known as one of the finest guitar players on the contra dance circuit, supplying a wonderful combination of intricate melodies, powerful rhythms and big bass sounds, often at the same time! While he has played mostly with fiddlers of the Celtic/New England style in many other bands (Elftones, Land of Sky, Skytones, Goosebone Prophets, Tribal Tune Twisters, and more) Roger has found a powerful rhythmic accomplice in David White. David's selections of unique old time tunes -- from driving to groovy and 'flowey' -- as well as several tunes he has created for banjo and fiddle, present a great diversity of tunes for dancing and for Roger to play off of. Having played together for 4 years now, their synergy is obvious, and the style that has emerged from this union continues to evolve. They love playing together and inspiring dancers w/ their music.

Toss the Possum
